en.Wedoany.com Reported - Heidelberg Materials UK has used evoZero cement, produced with carbon capture and storage technology, in the UK's first low-carbon concrete roof tile. The product, manufactured by Marley at its Keele facility, is named Edgemere 2.0 and maintains the same technical specifications and installation requirements as the existing Edgemere range.

The cement originates from Heidelberg Materials' carbon capture facility at its Brevik plant in Norway. Image: Heidelberg Materials

The carbon capture for evoZero cement takes place at Heidelberg Materials' Brevik plant in Norway, where carbon dioxide generated during production is captured and permanently stored beneath the North Sea. The associated emission reductions are allocated to UK cement products via Heidelberg Materials' Carbon Bank, using Environmental Attribute Certificates.

Andy Murphy, Commercial Director of Heidelberg Materials UK, stated that this launch demonstrates another application of evoZero cement. Murphy noted that Marley's new roof tile proves the versatility of evoZero cement and reflects growing market demand for low-carbon building materials, enabling architects, engineers, and sustainability design consultants to specify a product that reduces a project's carbon impact without rewriting or redrawing specifications.

Stuart Nicholson, Managing Director of Marley, said that Edgemere 2.0 is part of the company's decarbonisation strategy, marking a significant step for Marley and the roofing industry by introducing the UK's first concrete roof tile using carbon capture technology, expanding the supply of low-carbon roofing products for the construction sector.

Heidelberg Materials is also advancing its carbon capture project at its cement plant in Padeswood, North Wales. If successfully implemented, the facility is expected to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to approximately 95% of the plant's emissions.
