en.Wedoany.com Reported - Nigeria's clean energy company Greenplinth Africa Ltd is advancing a nationwide deployment plan for 80 million clean cookstoves, aiming to combine household energy access with carbon credit generation. The project is described as one of the most ambitious clean cooking initiatives ever undertaken on the African continent.

The company unveiled details of the plan at a stakeholder event in Lagos, attended by government officials, traditional leaders, climate experts, and development partners. Under a structured lease arrangement, cookstoves will be distributed free of charge to households, with each family receiving a proposed monthly cooking support allowance, health insurance covering up to eight family members, and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of biomass briquettes per month for 15 years.
Each stove comes with a 30-year warranty and is equipped with digital measurement, reporting, and verification (dMRV) devices, generating verifiable usage data via blockchain to support carbon credit issuance and climate finance applications. A pilot project launched in the Makoko informal settlement in Lagos has yielded significant results, which the company showcased during the event.
Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser on Climate Change to the Lagos State Government, speaking online during London Climate Action Week, stated that previously, households consumed an average of about 22 pounds of firewood daily, which dropped to approximately 1 pound after adopting clean cookstoves. She noted that nearly 97% of pilot households completely abandoned multiple fuel sources, and all users reported that the stoves were safer than traditional cooking methods. The plan is attracting attention from international climate finance institutions. Greenplinth also plans to plant 4 billion trees to complement the cookstove project.
Event chairman and former Minister of Environment Ibrahim Usman Jibril welcomed the plan, pointing out that indoor air pollution from traditional cooking causes over 3 million deaths annually.
