en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Gothenburg has resumed operations of a reinforced section of its container terminal yard, marking the latest milestone in the ongoing Skandia Gateway infrastructure project. The area has been handed back to terminal operator APM Terminals Gothenburg after completion of reinforcement works and is now back in service.
The port stated that the reopened area can add approximately 700 TEU of stacking capacity. While this increment is relatively small compared to the terminal's total throughput, each additional storage slot helps improve operational flexibility during periods of high demand. In container logistics, increasing stacking space is akin to adding lanes on a busy road—it does not eliminate congestion but helps maintain traffic flow.

The Skandia Gateway project aims to strengthen port infrastructure while ensuring uninterrupted cargo operations during construction. Once sections are completed, the port returns them to service as early as possible to achieve phased operational improvements before the overall project is finished. The Port of Gothenburg expressed gratitude for the collaboration between APM Terminals Gothenburg and construction company NCC on the reinforcement works.

This phased approach reflects a common challenge faced by large ports: how operators can modernize critical infrastructure without disrupting daily cargo flows. By completing sections in stages and opening areas early, the Port of Gothenburg seeks to balance long-term investments with current operational needs.
As the port continues to build infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels and support future container shipping growth, subsequent work on the Skandia Gateway project will proceed.
