Experts, scholars, and corporate representatives from the National Technical Committee for Heat Treatment Standardization and the main drafting units attended the meeting.

Large rolls are core components of heavy equipment such as rolling mills for heavy plates, cold strip tandem mills, and hot strip tandem mills. Their quality directly affects the stable operation and product quality of steel metallurgy production lines. The differential heat treatment process is a key technical means to achieve high hardness and high wear resistance on the roll surface while retaining high toughness in the core to ensure comprehensive performance. China First Heavy Industries is the first company in China to achieve industrial application of differential heat treatment for large backup rolls. Through years of industry-university-research collaboration, it has accumulated profound technical expertise and extensive practical experience in this field.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Heat Treatment Standardization, with the Standardization Administration of China serving as the competent authority. The standard specifies the terms and definitions, models and basic parameters, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation, storage, and maintenance for differential heat treatment furnaces for large rolls using natural gas or propane as fuel. The standard applies to horizontal or vertical gas-fired furnaces used for differential heating of large rolls, such as backup rolls for heavy plate mills and backup rolls for cold and hot strip tandem mills. The main drafting units include China First Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., Tianjin Heavy Equipment Engineering Research Co., Ltd., and Beijing Research Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Technology Co., Ltd., under the China Academy of Machinery Science and Technology Group.
Experts at the meeting conducted in-depth discussions on the technical framework, core indicators, and test methods of the standard draft. The meeting concluded that the formulation of this national standard will help fill the technical standard gap in the field of differential heat treatment equipment for large rolls in China, playing a leading role in regulating industry development and enhancing the overall technical level of roll manufacturing in China. The implementation of the standard will guide roll manufacturing enterprises toward higher technical development, avoiding resource and energy waste caused by disorderly competition, and promoting the leap of Chinese roll products from "Made in China" to "Standard in China," thereby enhancing international market competitiveness.
According to the project plan, the standard formulation cycle is 18 months. The drafting team will fully incorporate the expert opinions from this launch meeting, accelerate the preparation of the standard draft for comments, and ensure the completion of the standard formulation task with high standards and high quality.
