en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Swiss canton of Geneva is currently launching the installation of the first 80 acoustic signal systems, developed by Spie MTS, to help visually impaired individuals safely cross urban traffic by triggering sound signals via a remote control or smartphone application. The project was initiated by the Geneva Association for the Welfare of the Blind and Visually Impaired, implemented in close collaboration between Spie MTS and the canton of Geneva government, with prototype development beginning in 2020.
Spie MTS is a Swiss engineering company specializing in building technology, energy, and infrastructure services, with extensive experience in smart building and transportation technology. Unlike traditional automatic sound-emitting devices, this newly developed acoustic signal system only emits sound signals when actively activated by users, effectively reducing urban noise pollution, especially during nighttime hours. Users can trigger the signal using a dedicated remote control or a smartphone application called "MyMovEO."

According to Spie MTS, the system also features design advantages that prevent vandalism. Since the equipment is only activated when needed, it reduces wear and tear and potential damage risks associated with continuous operation. The system's development involved adapting hardware and software components of existing traffic signal infrastructure, with some original enclosures being retained for use.
The installation of the first 80 acoustic signal devices represents a significant step in advancing urban accessibility in the canton of Geneva. This project not only addresses the mobility needs of the visually impaired community but also reflects an innovative attempt to balance functionality and environmental friendliness in urban infrastructure. By returning control of sound signals to users, Geneva enhances urban inclusivity while reducing noise disturbances for nearby residents. As these devices are gradually put into use, Geneva's urban transportation system will become more friendly and convenient.
