The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding on July 20 during the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK, with plans to begin accepting applications this autumn and disburse funds by 2027. This marks the launch of the first funding partnership under the Florida International Aerospace Innovation Fund (IAIF), established last year to connect Florida-based companies and organizations with international partners for collaborative projects.

Eligibility requires that projects involve at least one aerospace company or organization based in Florida, include an international partner, and demonstrate clear commercialization potential. Proposals will be reviewed by a joint panel formed by Space Florida and the UK Space Agency, which operates under the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Rob Long, CEO of Space Florida, told SpaceNews that there is currently a wealth of dual-use technologies in the space sector, and he would not be surprised if products under development have some connection to government. There is no maximum funding limit for joint projects, with the amount depending on the level of interest in the project.

Rebecca Evernden, CEO of the UK Space Agency, said in a statement that the UK's space ambitions are bold, and partnerships like this prove that international collaboration is at the core of its plans. By joining forces with Space Florida, new doors are opened for UK companies, researchers, and innovators to participate in cutting-edge projects that define the next generation of space capabilities, services, and commercial opportunities.

UK space-related companies such as BAE Systems and, more recently, Space Forge, already operate in Florida. This funding commitment follows a broader trade and economic cooperation agreement signed between the UK and Florida in 2023.

Space Florida has also signed general cooperation agreements with agencies in Switzerland, Japan, and France. Long said these agreements could lead to more specific commitments under the IAIF framework. He also revealed that Space Florida is negotiating another international partnership, noting significant interest, with the advantage being flexibility to find mutually beneficial partners in industry that can benefit from such projects.

Space Florida also has a separate funding partnership with the Israel Innovation Authority, established in 2013. Through 13 funding rounds, this collaboration has provided over $23 million for joint projects involving Florida and Israeli companies.
