The Maryland Aviation Administration has selected a joint venture of Allan Myers and P. Flanigan & Sons to advance this critical infrastructure upgrade. The renovation begins Wednesday and will continue through October 8.
Shannetta Griffin, Executive Director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration, stated that this runway renovation project will help ensure the airport's long-term safety, reliability, and operational efficiency. To safely complete the construction, Runway 10-28 will be closed during the project. At 10,500 feet long, it is the airport's longest runway and one of BWI's two commercial runways.
The scope of work includes runway milling and paving, as well as upgrades to the electrical system to install modern LED runway lighting. The joint venture of Allan Myers, headquartered in Worcester, Pennsylvania, and P. Flanigan & Sons, based in Baltimore, will also close the second runway, 15R-33L, during nighttime construction periods. These temporary nighttime closures are necessary for construction to allow paving operations at the intersection of the two main runways. According to BWI, Runway 15R-33L will remain fully operational except during the planned nighttime construction periods.
This renovation project is one of several major airport upgrades across the United States in recent times. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced in March a $1 billion upgrade to Miami International Airport, which will build 17 new aircraft gates and adjacent passenger boarding areas. The AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa joint venture has also initiated a $1.45 billion upgrade to Chicago O'Hare International Airport with the Chicago Department of Aviation, where the project team will construct a new 580,000-square-foot Concourse D with 19 gates. Other airport infrastructure projects include a $900 million project at Nashville International Airport and a $1 billion modernization at Norfolk International Airport in Virginia.
