Wedoany.com Report-May 26, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, announced that approximately 3.1 million acres of wheat, representing over 98% of the 3.4 million acres cultivated, have been harvested nationwide. Farmers have delivered more than 3.2 million tons of locally grown wheat to silos and barns across various governorates, with harvesting, threshing, and delivery operations continuing smoothly.

Farouk stated: “The harvest and supply process is progressing smoothly, with no reported obstacles.” To support farmers, the government has implemented measures to streamline the supply chain, provide technical assistance, reduce post-harvest losses, and promote agricultural mechanization for greater efficiency. Approximately 420 collection points have been established nationwide to facilitate wheat deliveries from farmers and suppliers.

The minister projected this year’s total wheat production to reach around 10 million tons, with expected supply volumes surpassing 4.5 million tons. The robust harvest is attributed to incentives, including a purchase price of EGP 2,200 per ardeb announced early to motivate farmers. Farouk added: “The government’s commitment to ensuring farmers receive payments within 48 hours of delivery has also contributed to the strong performance.”

Wheat plays a critical role in meeting Egypt’s food security needs, particularly for subsidized bread. Currently, domestically grown wheat satisfies about 56% of the country’s demand, with plans to increase this to 65% in the near future. The government is balancing this goal with crop diversification and efficient water resource management to ensure sustainable agricultural growth.

The ongoing wheat harvest and supply efforts reflect Egypt’s focus on enhancing food self-sufficiency and supporting its agricultural sector. By providing timely payments, technical support, and adequate infrastructure, the government aims to bolster farmer participation and optimize wheat production, contributing to national food stability and economic development.
