Wedoany.com Report-Jun 1, Borealis Group, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, is investing over EUR 100 million to expand production capacity for its innovative Daploy High Melt Strength polypropylene (HMS PP) at its facility in Burghausen, Germany. The new production line, set to begin operations in the second half of 2026, will triple the company’s supply capacity for this fully recyclable polymer-foam solution, meeting rising global demand for sustainable materials in consumer products, automotive, and building and construction sectors.
Developed at Borealis’ Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria, Daploy HMS PP offers exceptional foamability, lightweight properties, and mechanical strength. These qualities support material efficiency, reduce costs, and lower CO2 emissions, making it ideal for recyclable monomaterial solutions. The material aligns with sustainability principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling, addressing the needs of industries seeking environmentally friendly alternatives.
In consumer products, Daploy HMS PP is used for items like reusable coffee cups and food packaging. Its lightweight and recyclable nature helps manufacturers comply with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, promoting sustainable packaging solutions. In the automotive sector, the material enables ultra-lightweight components for vehicle interiors and under-the-hood applications, which are 60-90% lighter than non-foamed alternatives. This contributes to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, while its monomaterial design and recyclable production trim-offs support zero-waste manufacturing and end-of-life recycling.
For building and construction, Daploy HMS PP replaces heavier materials in insulation and paneling, offering durability, strength, and heat resistance. Its lightweight and recyclable properties enhance the sustainability of these components, making it a valuable solution for modern construction needs.
“In line with our We4Customers strategy, this investment creates value for customers by enabling them to design recyclable, foam-based products for a wide range of high-performance applications,” said Craig Arnold, Borealis Executive Vice President Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Base Chemicals. “By expanding production, we’re ensuring a reliable supply of this advanced material to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals and deliver high-performance solutions.”
The Burghausen expansion reinforces Borealis’ leadership in the polypropylene market and its commitment to sustainable innovation.
