Japan's MITSUI E&S Completes Commercialization of Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 20, Japan's MITSUI E&S completed the commercialization of a large marine ammonia dual-fuel engine and an ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS), establishing an integrated supply system for both types of equipment and enabling the provision of ammonia-fueled propulsion systems for actual vessels.

This commercialization involves the MITSUI-Everllence B&W 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIA-HPSCR large low-speed two-stroke engine. This model has a maximum continuous output of 17,430 kW, employs co-combustion of ammonia fuel and pilot fuel, and is equipped with a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction system. In February 2026, MITSUI E&S conducted onshore tests linking the engine and AFSS, witnessed by the classification society ClassNK. Subsequent reviews confirmed that the relevant equipment complies with classification society rules and has passed the International Maritime Organization's nitrogen oxide emission certification.

The ammonia combustion process produces no carbon dioxide, but it presents technical challenges such as difficult ignition, toxicity, and corrosiveness, requiring supporting safety control systems in the engine, fuel storage, and fuel supply stages. MITSUI E&S simultaneously manufactures the ammonia dual-fuel engine and the AFSS, integrating fuel supply, engine operation, and exhaust gas treatment into a single propulsion system.

The company's next step is to expand the AFSS onshore test facility to accommodate both Everllence and WinGD licensed engines, and to establish a mass production system for engines and fuel supply systems. The AFSS development has received support from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) Green Innovation Fund, while the expansion of the test facility is incorporated into Japan's zero-emission ship construction promotion project.
