Klaipėda Port signs €24.5 million contract, largest expansion to begin in autumn 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Klaipėda has begun site preparation for the largest expansion project in its history, with initial works underway in the southern part of the port, an area designated for the development of a major new port zone. Construction of the southern breakwater is expected to begin in autumn 2026.

Tilsta, which won the tender launched earlier in 2026, will build the new southern breakwater and has signed a contract worth €24.5 million (excluding VAT) with the Klaipėda Port Authority.

Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda Port Authority, said that after lengthy planning and preparation, site work has now begun and the port is very close to launching the southern port area expansion. Once the site is ready, construction of the southern breakwater will commence this autumn, marking the first phase of the largest expansion project in the history of the Port of Klaipėda.

The new breakwater will help limit seawater inflow into the Curonian Lagoon. The broader southern expansion will create additional space for the port, significantly enhancing cargo handling capacity and other port operations.

According to the plan, the Port of Klaipėda will invest nearly €600 million in the southern expansion between 2026 and 2029, making this the largest component of the port's four-year investment programme. When accounting for funds expected to be invested by future investors, the total project value will exceed €1 billion, making the southern port area expansion one of the largest investment projects currently underway in Lithuania.

Latakas stated that the project demonstrates Lithuania is steadily advancing its plans to build a stronger port, which will make the country more attractive to investors, enhance its competitiveness in international markets, and support military mobility needs of significance to Lithuania and the entire region.
