Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 9, As of early August 2025, the United Kingdom's cereal and oilseed harvests are progressing steadily, with nearly 50% of the wheat crop completed. According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), wheat yields are showing improvement despite an initial slow start. The first 10% of winter wheat harvest recorded yields 11% below the five-year average. However, overall yields have now reached 7.66 tons per hectare, just 1% below the average, reflecting more favorable outcomes across many farms.

Yields vary by region and soil conditions. In the East of England, farms with lighter soils experienced up to a 16% reduction due to insufficient rainfall. By contrast, the South East recorded yields 24% above average. Grain quality remains strong, with an average specific weight of 79 kilograms per hectoliter. Group 1 wheat samples also showed promising protein levels, averaging 13.5%.

The spring barley harvest is progressing well, showing a 21% increase over the five-year average. Current average yields stand at 6.98 tons per hectare, with individual farm results ranging from 5.08 to 7.37 tons. Harvesting is most advanced in the East of England, where 93% of the crop is already collected. Some growers have reported yields 20–30% above typical levels, although more regional variability is expected as the harvest continues.

The winter barley harvest has been completed nationwide. Yields varied significantly, from 4.09 to 8.27 tons per hectare, with the national average standing at 1% below the five-year norm. Grain quality is consistent, with a specific weight average of 65 kilograms per hectoliter. Nitrogen content in winter barley averages 1.7%, which falls within but near the higher end of the typical range required for malting purposes, usually between 1.66–1.85%.

The winter oilseed rape harvest concluded slightly ahead of the previous year’s timeline. This season’s yield reached an average of 3.98 tons per hectare—the highest for winter-sown crops since 2011. The crop’s oil content is favorable, averaging between 44% and 45%, indicating excellent quality.

Oat harvesting is also well underway, with 48% of the national crop harvested—compared to just 22% at the same time last year. Early yields are approximately 5% below the five-year average of 5.07 tons per hectare. As this figure includes both spring and winter oat varieties, it may not fully represent the performance of each type individually.

Harvesting efforts across the UK are continuing, with crop conditions and yields varying by location and weather patterns.
