Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 28, Belgian marine contractor DEME, through its Taiwanese joint venture CDWE, has secured a significant contract for the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm, located approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli County, Taiwan. The project, developed by Synera Renewable Energy, is set to deliver 495 MW of renewable energy upon completion, contributing significantly to Taiwan’s renewable energy goals.

The foundation installation works are expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

The contract encompasses the transportation and installation of 35 foundations and an offshore substation, along with scour protection works to ensure structural stability. DEME will utilize several vessels from its fleet, including the Green Jade, a floating offshore installation vessel designed and built in Taiwan by CDWE, marking a milestone as the first of its kind in the region. A rock placement vessel will also be deployed to support the scour protection activities. Foundation installation is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, pending the final investment decision.

DEME has been active in Taiwan’s offshore wind sector since 2019, when it co-founded CDWE, the country’s first offshore wind contractor, in collaboration with CSBC Corporation. Through CDWE, DEME has contributed to key projects such as Zhong Neng, Changfang Xidao, Hai Long, and Greater Changhua, establishing a strong presence in the region’s renewable energy landscape.

DEME Asia-Pacific Offshore Energy General Manager Frank Jonckheere stated: “The Formosa 4 contract builds on DEME’s strong track record in Taiwan. We are proud to play a significant role in advancing Taiwan’s clean energy transition and supporting its long-term vision for renewables. Through our joint venture CDWE, we provide integrated solutions that help our clients successfully develop their projects. In addition to bringing decades of knowledge and experience to Taiwan, we are nurturing local marine engineering talents and seafarers specialised in offshore wind who will help drive the industry forward for years to come.”

DEME, a global leader in offshore energy, dredging, and marine infrastructure, employs 5,800 professionals and reported a turnover of €4.1 billion in 2024. The company continues to expand its portfolio, with previous contracts including the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, where it handled the transportation and installation of inter-array cables and secondary steel components. The Formosa 4 project underscores DEME’s commitment to sustainable energy development and its role in fostering local expertise in Taiwan’s growing offshore wind industry.
