en.Wedoany.com Reported - Renewable energy company Sonnedix has acquired a 260MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project portfolio in Tuscania, Italy, expanding its energy storage operations in the country.

The portfolio comprises two adjacent standalone battery storage projects with capacities of 160MW/4 hours and 100MW/4 hours, both acquired from Sphera Energy. This acquisition brings Sonnedix's total BESS installed capacity to approximately 2.8GW.

With a total renewable energy installed capacity of 11GW, Sonnedix is continuously expanding its footprint in Italy, which the company considers a significant growth market for energy storage. CEO Axel Thiemann stated that the company first ventured into battery storage in other parts of Italy last year and is now scaling up in Tuscania based on that foundation. He noted that batteries enable fuller utilization of generated electricity, allowing storage and dispatch when needed, with hybridization and optimization being the direction for the entire project portfolio. Thiemann emphasized that with Sonnedix's long-term presence and deep expertise in the region, Italy is well-positioned to lead this trend.

In March 2026, Sonnedix acquired six photovoltaic power plants supported by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), bringing its total installed capacity in Italy to over 1GW. The company's overall project portfolio currently stands at 11GW, with over 1GW under construction, 4.8GW in operation, and 5GW in development, spanning operations in Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.

In April this year, Sonnedix signed three PPAs with Copec EMOAC for the Librillo project in Taltal, Antofagasta region, Chile. The project is a 117MW standalone BESS capable of delivering 643.8MWh of electricity daily for five hours. Under the agreement, Copec EMOAC can add nighttime power supply to its portfolio through this BESS, gaining reliable and flexible electricity.
