Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 6, Construction of the Third Mega Lot of Italy’s Ionian State Road (SS 106) in Calabria has reached 76% completion. The project, led by Webuild on behalf of ANAS (FS Italiane Group), is one of the country’s largest ongoing infrastructure developments. It aims to transform the Calabrian section of the SS 106 into a modern dual carriageway, improving connectivity and road safety across southern Italy.
Transport in Italy’s Calabria region will be improved once the Ionian State Road (SS 106) project is complete
Preparations for raising the deck of the Annunziata viaduct have been completed, marking a significant step forward in construction. The Annunziata viaduct, one of the most complex and iconic structures in the Third Mega Lot, extends over 900m and features a distinctive two-level steel-concrete composite deck—one level for each direction of traffic. Its design reflects advanced engineering techniques to ensure durability and efficiency.
Another major component, the Ferro viaduct, recently achieved a construction milestone. Standing 20m tall and stretching more than 500m, the viaduct comprises a mixed steel-concrete structure with 11 spans. Building it required around 2,800 tonnes of steel and 23,000m³ of concrete, illustrating the technical precision and scale of the overall project.
Work is also progressing on four additional viaducts—Straface, Monaco, Forno, and Stellitano—along with the architecturally distinctive Avena viaduct. The Avena structure is recognized as the most visually significant overpass of the entire project, featuring V-shaped steel piers that highlight modern design principles. Meanwhile, asphalt laying continues between the Sibari and Trebisacce junctions along the first 18km of the route. Once ANAS completes auxiliary works in this section, early traffic openings are expected before full completion.
Tunnel construction is advancing as well. The second diaphragm of the Trebisacce Tunnel, which spans approximately 3.3km and includes twin tubes, is scheduled to be broken through in the coming weeks. Excavation and lining activities are also underway on ten other artificial tunnels along the 38km corridor.
The construction site currently employs about 1,200 workers and supports a supply chain of over 880 companies, with a significant regional contribution—approximately 45% of participating firms are based in Calabria. This local involvement highlights the project’s contribution to regional employment and economic activity.
Once completed, the Third Mega Lot will enhance transport links between the Ionian coasts of Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia, strengthening regional connections to major highway corridors A14 and A2. With an initial estimated cost of €3 billion, the project represents a major investment in Italy’s infrastructure modernization, aiming to promote safer, more efficient travel across southern regions and stimulate local development through improved accessibility and logistics.
