Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 22, BASF has expanded its portfolio of certified biomass-balanced methanol by obtaining ISCC EU certification, complementing existing ISCC PLUS and REDcert accreditations. The new certification, effective since mid-2025, enables the company’s Intermediates division to supply biomass-balanced methanol that meets requirements across both the chemical and biofuel sectors.
Under the biomass balance approach, renewable feedstock is allocated to the final product while maintaining identical chemical and performance properties to conventional fossil-based methanol. This allows customers to adopt the sustainable alternative as a direct drop-in replacement without modifying existing processes or formulations.
ISCC EU certification confirms compliance with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction criteria, alongside additional ecological and social standards. The expanded certification range provides customers in diverse industries with flexible, independently verified options to support their sustainability objectives and regulatory compliance.
Holger Suhren, Senior Account Manager at BASF’s Intermediates division, said: “With the addition of ISCC EU certification, we are now positioned to serve both chemical and biofuel industry customers with a flexible, credible, and independently verified offering. Initial market feedback has been very positive, particularly from several of our strategic partners.”
Vasilios Galanos, Senior Vice President Europe at BASF’s Intermediates Division, added: “The fact that we have already generated business with ISCC EU Methanol confirms that we are on the right track. This expansion not only reflects our commitment to sustainability but also helps us reach our ambition of being the preferred partner for sustainable intermediates for our customers.”
Methanol serves as a fundamental building block for numerous applications, including plastics, pharmaceuticals, crop protection products, and fuel additives. The biomass-balanced variant delivers significant greenhouse gas emission reductions compared with conventional methanol, enabling downstream users to advance their own decarbonisation targets while maintaining full product performance. The broadened certification portfolio strengthens BASF’s ability to meet growing demand for verified sustainable intermediates across global markets.
