Wedoany.com Report-Dec.1, British Steel has secured a £35 million ($45.7 million) contract to supply rail products for Türkiye's expanding high-speed railway network. The announcement was made by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during the recent G20 summit in Johannesburg.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the new agreement.

This new agreement follows an earlier £30 million supply contract for the high-speed line connecting Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep in southern Türkiye. The latest order forms part of more than £400 million in export deals highlighted at the summit.

"We are proud to have already delivered £30m of our rail products into high-speed projects to help decarbonise travel in Türkiye and are delighted to be building upon this with a new supply agreement," said Lisa Coulson, chief commercial officer at British Steel. "Securing these prestigious contracts – with the support of UK Export Finance – was a major achievement and underlines British Steel's ability to build the sustainable track systems of the future."

During the Johannesburg visit, Prime Minister Starmer inspected a train depot operating rolling stock manufactured in Derby. He also announced a cooperation framework between the UK and South Africa, under which British technical expertise will support modernisation of South Africa's rail sector. Crossrail International, a UK government-owned consultancy, will assist in attracting private investment and enhancing freight and passenger services.

Separately, a partnership has been established between the UK and Vietnam to advance digital transformation in Vietnam's railway infrastructure. The initiative will see UK specialists work with Vietnam's Ministry of Construction to introduce advanced technological solutions across the national network. It builds on existing collaboration between Crossrail International and railway authorities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

"Working with international partners to deliver jobs and opportunity at home is a one-way ticket to growth," said Prime Minister Starmer. "The UK is a world leader in engineering, from steel welders in Scunthorpe to technicians in Derby, British workers are powering the world through their skill and profession."

The series of agreements demonstrates continued demand for British-manufactured rail products and expertise in major infrastructure projects worldwide, supporting both overseas development goals and employment in the UK steel and engineering sectors.
