Wedoany.com Report-Dec.27, Bangladesh's wheat imports for the 2025/2026 marketing year are projected to reach 6.7 million metric tons. This represents an increase of 0.5 million metric tons compared to the previous season, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA).

Lower global wheat prices combined with stable international supply are expected to support the higher import volume. In Bangladesh, wheat serves as an alternative to rice in some food preparations. With rice prices remaining elevated, demand for wheat flour is anticipated to continue growing steadily.

Data from the Food Ministry indicates that from the start of the current season through December 10, 2025, Bangladesh imported 2.64 million metric tons of wheat. This total includes 250,370 metric tons procured through the public sector.

On July 20, 2025, the Government of Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Wheat Association (USWA). The agreement allows for the import of up to 700,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat annually over the next five years. As of December 10, 2025, the government had already contracted to purchase 660,000 metric tons under this arrangement.

The first shipment of U.S. wheat arrived in Bangladesh on October 26, 2025. Subsequent deliveries have continued, contributing to the diversification of import sources and ensuring reliable supply for domestic needs.

These developments reflect Bangladesh's efforts to meet rising domestic demand for wheat-based products. The country relies heavily on imports to supplement limited local production, as wheat consumption supports food security, household use, and industrial applications such as flour milling.

The projected increase in imports aligns with ongoing trends in consumption patterns, where wheat provides a stable and cost-effective option amid fluctuations in other staple prices. This approach helps maintain adequate availability for consumers and processors throughout the year.

Overall, the combination of favorable global market conditions and strategic procurement agreements supports Bangladesh's ability to secure sufficient wheat supplies for the 2025/2026 season.
