European Energy recently announced that its Cotswolds Solar and Battery Storage Park in Denmark has been officially connected to the grid. This project combines the original solar park with a 200MWh battery energy storage system, making it the largest integrated solar and storage facility in the Nordic region.
The solar power plant has been operational since 2022, with the newly added battery modules deployed directly within the existing site. European Energy completed the installation of all battery equipment, electrical integration with the photovoltaic plant and the grid, and the construction of supporting infrastructure in just seven months. The project is currently in the commissioning phase, where final testing and optimization of the technical components are being conducted to prepare for full commercial operation.
Mads Lykke Andersen, Head of Technical Development at European Energy, stated: "The commissioning of the Cotswolds Solar and Battery Storage Park marks European Energy's scaling up of another technology. With the deployment of large-scale batteries, this trend will be further strengthened in 2026." Thorvald Spanggaard, Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development at the company, added: "We will strongly promote the application of battery technology across all our project portfolios in the future. By 2027, we will deploy over 1GW of battery capacity in the European market."
In Denmark, solar power already plays a significant role in the electricity mix, meeting over 60% of the country's electricity demand during peak periods. This also highlights the need for energy storage systems to smooth out generation fluctuations and support grid stability. The project is operationally optimized by the Danish commodity company as the Balance Responsible Party, marking the company's first asset to integrate renewable energy with a battery energy storage system for operation.
