Kier Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the Bristol Temple Meads South Gate Car Park project, with a contract value of £35 million. This project is a key component of the Bristol Temple Quarter regeneration plan, aiming to enhance transport connectivity and promote sustainable urban development.

The South Gate project will deliver a new southern entrance to Bristol Temple Meads station to improve transport connectivity and support the sustainable transport system for the emerging Bristol Temple Quarter (BTQ) area. This development aims to unlock the growth potential of this strategic part of the city.

The BTQ LLP, comprising Bristol City Council, Homes England, and the West of England Combined Authority, oversees the program. While Network Rail is not a formal partner in the LLP, it plays a crucial role as a key delivery partner for the integration of station infrastructure and operations.

Key components of the South Gate development include: a seven-storey multi-storey car park providing spaces for cars and motorcycles; a three-storey cycle hub with secure bicycle parking; and a carefully designed public realm featuring landscaping, pedestrian areas, and spaces for temporary pop-up events.

Additional infrastructure improvements include: a new pedestrian link to Temple Meads station; a fully segregated pedestrian and cycle route along Bath Road connecting to the future active travel network; and a new bus stop with waiting facilities. The project also involves a signal-controlled vehicle access junction to the car park and the relocation of the Network Rail services yard within the site.

Kier Construction was selected through a competitive tendering process that received five bids. Other bidders included Vinci Building, GMI Construction Group, Goldbeck Construction, and Huber Parking UK.

The contract is expected to be formally signed on February 27, 2026, with works scheduled to commence on March 2, 2026, and anticipated completion by March 31, 2028. This timeline will deliver significant improvements to Bristol's transport infrastructure and public realm, reinforcing the city's commitment to sustainable urban development and enhanced connectivity.

The South Gate project is the first phase of the BTQ LLP's work, which aims to deliver thousands of new homes, jobs, and infrastructure across a 135-hectare site in central Bristol. The BTQ LLP leads the regeneration efforts and manages the planning application developed by Arup with input from Mott MacDonald.
