Wedoany.com Report on Feb 26th, Alena Mastantuono, Vice President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), recently pointed out that the European Union should abandon the so-called "energy dogma" and promote nuclear energy development by simplifying state aid procedures, accelerating licensing approvals, accessing EU funds, and establishing a fair financing framework. She emphasized that nuclear energy should be regarded as a key option for achieving climate goals and treated equally with renewable energy sources.

In a commentary column, Mastantuono stated that as the European Commission formulates a strategic plan for nuclear energy, the EU has an opportunity to shift from hesitation to empowerment, choosing to become a driver rather than an obstacle in the energy transition. She believes that the principle of technological neutrality, as a long-term commitment, must be effectively implemented to guide the formulation of energy policies.

She noted that Europe's geopolitical situation has increased the demand for nuclear energy. With reduced Russian gas supplies and uncertainties in the liquefied natural gas supply chain, the EU urgently needs to enhance its energy autonomy. Nuclear energy, as a stable and reliable low-carbon energy source, helps address these challenges.

Mastantuono mentioned that the interconnectedness of the European energy market allows consumers to benefit from over 100 nuclear reactors across 13 member states. This provides crucial support for regional energy security while promoting stable economic development.

"Europe has set ambitious climate neutrality targets for 2050," Mastantuono said. "Achieving these goals while maintaining strategic autonomy and economic strength requires placing every credible low-carbon option on the table." She reiterated that nuclear energy is an indispensable part of Europe's efforts to achieve its climate goals.
