Wedoany.com Report on Mar 4th, Qualcomm recently announced at the 2026 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain that it has formed a strategic alliance with numerous telecom operators, network equipment vendors, cloud service providers, and device manufacturers. The alliance has developed a detailed milestone roadmap with the goal of launching commercial 6G systems starting in 2029.
The alliance participants cover three major areas: devices, networks, and cloud infrastructure. Notable companies include Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, as well as operators such as BT Group, T-Mobile, and Telstra. Other supporting companies include Alibaba, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, and smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.
The roadmap outlines a sequence from standards development and early validation to pre-commercial demonstrations and commercial deployment. The alliance plans to focus on the timely development of key 6G standards, conduct early system validation, and demonstrate pre-commercial devices and networks compliant with 6G specifications in 2028. It also calls for establishing a common industry benchmark for 6G readiness and initiating the initial global deployment of interoperable commercial 6G systems starting in 2029, while developing new business models and services.
Qualcomm positions 6G as an AI-native system built around three pillars: connectivity, wide-area sensing, and high-performance computing. AI will be embedded in the design of wireless devices, network cores, and computing platforms, rather than being an add-on. Technical directions include intelligent wireless devices, virtualization and cloud RAN, and AI-based network autonomy, emphasizing the role of edge and centralized data centers in running new AI workloads.
The 6G system will support higher efficiency for telecom applications, new agent-based devices, and AI-enabled services, such as context-aware data, low-altitude airspace and ground traffic management, and large-scale data insights. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated: "6G is not just the next step in wireless evolution. It is the foundation for an AI-native future that distributes intelligence across devices, edge, and cloud, and transforms network providers into AI-driven enterprises. As a leader in multiple generations of global wireless innovation, Qualcomm brings deep expertise and capability to the development and commercialization of 6G. As with every wireless transition, success will depend on strong and focused partnerships, shared goals, and joint innovation. This group of industry leaders is making a unified commitment to invest and innovate to realize a shared vision for 6G, with deployment beginning in 2029."
At the congress, Qualcomm showcased 6G demonstrations. The alliance's next public milestone will focus on standards progress, cloud and virtualized RAN validation, and early demonstrations of specification-compliant devices and networks ahead of the planned commercial deployment in 2029. This initiative aims to define a clearer path from research to commercialization, potentially influencing investment decisions in networks, chips, devices, and cloud infrastructure.
