Wedoany.com Report on Mar 6th, Anglian Water is advancing its strategic water grid by planning to build a new water pipeline stretching from Lolworth near Cambridge to the Rede storage reservoir in Suffolk, aiming to more efficiently allocate water resources across the East of England. This pipeline project is a crucial part of the company's long-term water security plan and will help address the region's growing water stress. The project team encourages residents, landowners, parish councils, and stakeholders along the proposed route to participate in the public consultation, which closes on April 12th, to gather feedback before finalizing the plan and submitting a formal planning application.

The East of England is one of the driest and fastest-growing regions in the country. Climate change is leading to hotter, drier summers, and ongoing population growth is increasing water demand. This pipeline project will help transfer water from more accessible areas to regions facing mounting supply pressure, reducing the number of households and businesses reliant on single sources, thereby decreasing dependence on sensitive water sources like chalk streams. Environmental and archaeological surveys have already begun, with the project team working to avoid sensitive habitats, protect wildlife, and preserve significant archaeological sites to support the smooth construction of the pipeline.
Ian Rule, Director of Water Services at Anglian Water, stated: "The East of England is one of the driest and fastest-growing regions in the country, and climate change is placing increasing pressure on the water resources we all rely on. The Cambridge to Rede pipeline is a vital part of our long-term plan to secure water supplies for future generations, while protecting the environment and reducing reliance on sensitive sources like chalk streams." Andy Alder, Managing Director of Major Infrastructure Delivery, added that infrastructure of this scale must be delivered in the right way, working with communities rather than bypassing them. By employing modern construction techniques and meticulous planning, the aim is to minimize disruption and leave a positive legacy for the areas where work takes place. The company will host a series of consultation events in March, including a virtual event on March 11th, to gather community input on the pipeline project.
