Wedonay.com Report on Mar 7th, UK water company United Utilities has recently launched a £34.4 million upgrade project at the Crewe Sewage Treatment Works in Cheshire. The engineering contractor, Costain, is applying technology from industrial cooling systems to refurbish filters, aiming to reduce the levels of ammonia and phosphorus discharged into the River Weaver.

The project utilizes cooling tower-style packing media, commonly found in the energy sector, installed within two nitrifying trickling filters. This polypropylene media provides a large surface area for nitrifying bacteria to attach, aiding in the conversion of ammonia to nitrate. This enhances treatment efficiency and helps address local population growth.

Costain's engineers have already manufactured and assembled the new media, bringing the first phase of work forward by approximately 12 months. Staged refurbishments are planned for this year. The company is also collaborating with local partners to recycle the old media, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

The upgrade at Crewe is part of United Utilities' over £13 billion investment programme across North West England, aimed at improving rivers, lakes, and drinking water supplies. The project is being delivered through the "Enterprise Model," a collaboration with seven design and construction companies, including Costain, to deliver a portfolio of projects worth £2.5 billion.

From an environmental perspective, the upgrade aims to reduce nutrient discharges and improve river health. Ammonia and phosphorus can lead to oxygen depletion and algal growth in waterways. Reducing these substances is a common goal for sewage treatment improvements to meet regulatory standards and support ecosystems.

Independent observers and regulators oversee such projects to ensure water quality improvements. United Utilities has reported on similar upgrades as part of efforts to modernise older treatment works in the region and reduce pollution.

Costain Project Director Richard Helme said: "As a partner of United Utilities, we have a great working relationship. This trust is built on our ability to apply innovative solutions. Drawing on practices from the energy sector, we have delivered this critical upgrade ahead of schedule."

United Utilities Enterprise Director Tony Slater said: "Through the Enterprise Model, we work with partners with a strong track record to support the transformation of infrastructure in the North West. Costain's innovative approach is impressive. The upgrade at Crewe will enhance performance and make the works more resilient."
