The Department of Fertilizers disclosed in a statement that as of recent, the total fertilizer stock stood at 177.31 lakh tonnes, which is 36% higher than the same period last year. This specifically includes 59.30 lakh tonnes of urea, 25.13 lakh tonnes of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate), and 55.87 lakh tonnes of complex fertilizers. The statement did not mention stock data for MOP (Muriate of Potash).

During the previous Kharif cropping season, fertilizer sales were 193.2 lakh tonnes of urea, 46.33 lakh tonnes of DAP, 10.95 lakh tonnes of MOP, and 81.48 lakh tonnes of complex fertilizers. The demand for the Kharif cropping season in 2026 is expected to be estimated in April during the annual conference of state agriculture ministers.

The statement pointed out that through an advance stocking strategy, the government has built up substantial buffer stocks. The department stated, "The stock position shows that India is insulated from global supply shocks and ensures farmers have barrier-free access to fertilizers."

To ensure supply continuity, the government has secured key import shipments. As of February 2026, 98 lakh tonnes of finished fertilizers have been imported, with plans to import over 17 lakh tonnes in the next three months. Indian companies have also entered into long-term supply agreements with major international producers to hedge against price and supply volatility.

Amidst tight LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) supply, the government has assured fertilizer companies that gas supply is a priority. The Department of Fertilizers encouraged farmers to continue preparing for the Kharif season and stated that farmers' interests would not be compromised.

Fertilizer companies have proposed advancing their scheduled plant maintenance from March to optimize resources. The government is seeking additional imports from multiple global sources and is coordinating with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to monitor the situation, ensuring timely discharge of cargoes and swift responses to market changes.
