Wedoany.com Report on Mar 14th, Anglian Water in the UK has recently achieved a significant construction milestone for its water supply project. On March 11, Water Minister Emma Hardy visited the project site and, together with Anglian Water CEO Mark Thurston, Major Infrastructure Delivery Managing Director Andy Old, and several apprentice engineers, activated a pipeline valve. This marked the first operational use of the Weldsted to Hoxne section of the water supply project this spring, which will provide water to the Ipswich and Colchester areas.

This 27.7-kilometre section is part of Anglian Water's strategic water supply network. This multi-million-pound, 320-kilometre-long network will stretch from North Lincolnshire to Essex and is planned to be fully operational by the end of this decade. Anglian Water CEO Mark Thurston said: "Reaching this first operational milestone on the strategic pipeline is a proud moment for everyone involved in delivering this environmental project for the communities we serve."

The water supply project is being delivered by the Strategic Pipeline Alliance, with partners including Anglian Water, Costain, Farrans, Jacobs, and Mott MacDonald Bentley. It is the largest drinking water project in the UK in a generation. Once completed, this network will transfer 15 to 55 million litres of water daily from the water-rich north of the region to the drier south and east, addressing water supply pressures from climate change and population growth. Without this project, the region could face water demand exceeding supply by 2030. The project will also help protect sensitive ecosystems, including chalk streams, by reducing groundwater abstraction.

During her visit, Water Minister Emma Hardy stated: "This government is committed to securing our future water supply, and projects like Anglian Water's are crucial to that goal. This significant investment will help move water more efficiently across the region, boost drought resilience, and support one of the fastest-growing areas in the country."

The water supply project is part of Anglian Water's broader £11 billion programme of work, its largest-ever investment plan, nearly double the amount spent in the previous five-year period. According to the plan, once the first 320-kilometre phase is complete, a second phase will further extend into Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, and Norfolk, creating a fully interconnected system. Ultimately, this strategic water supply network will span 580 kilometres across Eastern England, helping Anglian Water tackle climate change, population growth, and pressures on existing water sources.
