en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 26th, Siemens Mobility and Akiem have signed a framework agreement covering up to 80 Vectron locomotives, including 50 firm orders, and introduced a new dual-mode electric-battery variant. This agreement builds upon the long-term partnership between the two companies; since 2021, Akiem has ordered 120 locomotives from the Vectron series. The first locomotives under the new contract are planned for delivery between 2029 and 2030 for leasing in the European market.

The new Vectron Dual Mode electric-battery locomotive expands the Vectron platform by replacing the diesel engine with a modular traction battery system, enabling seamless cross-network operation on both overhead electrified lines and non-electrified lines. The locomotive is configured with a battery capacity exceeding 2 MWh, delivers up to 2,400 kW of power in both battery and electric modes, reaches a top speed of 160 km/h, and offers a tractive effort of 300 kN, making it suitable for both freight and passenger services.

Andre Rodenbeck of Siemens Mobility stated: "This development is a significant step in expanding the Vectron family, offering a fully electric solution that enhances operational flexibility and supports sustainable rail transport." Fabien Rochefort of Akiem added: "This locomotive will meet the needs of a wide range of customers, reducing operational costs and emissions while maintaining performance on non-continuously electrified lines."

The Vectron Dual Mode battery locomotive supports rail decarbonization by reducing dependency on diesel traction, particularly on partially electrified corridors. Siemens Mobility is expanding its portfolio of alternative traction solutions, including battery and hydrogen technologies, to promote climate-friendly rail operations. This innovation aims to enhance the efficiency and environmental sustainability of the European rail network, driving the development of green transportation.
