en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 27th, Echelon Data Centres has launched the country's first green energy campus project at its DUB20 facility in Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. This project is based on the government's Large Energy User Action Plan, aiming to integrate data centers with renewable energy generation to reduce reliance on the traditional power grid.
The campus will connect to up to 800 megawatts of offshore wind resources through a shared 220kV substation with SSE Renewables. On-site solar photovoltaic systems will also be installed, generating over 6,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, and battery energy storage facilities will be deployed to enhance grid stability.
Two energy centers will provide grid support functions, supplying power to the national grid when renewable energy supply is insufficient. Construction is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in 2028, forming part of Echelon's €4.2 billion investment in its DUB20 and DUB30 facilities.
Darragh O'Brien, Ireland's Minister for Climate, Energy and Environment, stated: "The Large Energy User Action Plan provides clear direction for the industry, helping to strengthen the grid, advance renewable energy adoption, and achieve climate goals." He added: "The green energy campus at DUB20 is a key example, integrating data infrastructure, offshore wind, solar power, battery storage, and grid support capabilities, embodying a model of sustainable development."
Graeme McWilliams, Co-founder of Echelon, noted: "Establishing Ireland's first green energy campus at DUB20 demonstrates how digital infrastructure can develop in synergy with national climate policies." He explained: "By co-locating data centers with renewable energy and grid support facilities, we are putting the government's framework into practice, committed to reducing emissions, enhancing energy security, and boosting the regional economy."
