en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 31st, New York-based flywheel energy storage system startup Qnetic, after achieving profitability in 2025, has now renovated a factory in Sacramento, California, preparing for small-scale production of its Q500 solid-state mechanical battery. This move marks the company's official entry into the production phase of grid-scale flywheel energy storage systems.

Michael Pratt, CEO of Qnetic, confirmed to ESS News that the Q500 is the company's alpha prototype product. Pratt stated, "The basic specifications of the Q500 are 500 kWh, 125 kW, with maximum power discharge lasting 4 hours, and lower power discharge extending up to 12 hours. The initial prototypes will be adjusted from 500 kWh to 100-200 kWh, as we are collecting data to increase rotor speed, thereby gradually increasing energy storage capacity."

According to Qnetic, its design philosophy sets this flywheel energy storage system apart from traditional short-duration flywheel systems, making it more suitable for grid applications. The company's website notes, "Traditional flywheel energy storage systems are typically designed for high power, short duration, and low energy capacity. Qnetic takes the opposite approach, focusing on long-duration, high energy capacity, and medium-power grid-scale flywheel energy storage systems."

Pratt also revealed that Qnetic is developing more advanced systems. He added, "The product roadmap extends from the Q500—our initial product currently in production—to the Q1 or other variants to be launched in the future at the appropriate time." Pratt explained, "The Q1 will be an evolved version of the Q500, using a similar architecture, ensuring that our patented technology is applied in both."
