en.Wedoany.com Reported - Exolum has established a subsidiary, Exolum 7CO2, which will work with Severnside Carbon and Técnicas Reunidas to build the UK's first large-scale carbon dioxide hub. This facility will provide industrial emitters in South West England, the Midlands, and South Wales with access to the national Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) ecosystem, helping them adapt to increasingly stringent decarbonisation requirements. The target operational date is set for 2031.
The terminal is designed with a fully flexible and scalable model, supporting multimodal transport via rail and ship to accelerate deployment. Once operational, it will be capable of managing up to 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, roughly equivalent to the total annual emissions of South West England. Currently, government-supported CCUS facilities are primarily concentrated in Northern England and Scotland, while nearly half of the UK's industrial emissions originate outside these clusters—South Wales alone accounts for approximately 5% of national carbon emissions. This hub will effectively address the demand for localised decarbonisation infrastructure in industrially intensive areas.
The project will not only serve existing high-emission industries but also provide a foundation for emerging sectors, such as regional data centres pursuing zero emissions and sustainable aviation fuel projects. As an open, multimodal terminal, it offers energy-intensive industries efficient solutions spanning capture, transport, and storage.
Exolum will contribute technical and human resources, employing a high-standard operational model for safety and reliability to ensure supply chain stability. Severnside Carbon will continue its role as a strategic advisor, coordinating communication with the public sector and key industry stakeholders, while advancing regional development plans for Carbon Capture as a Service and sustainable aviation fuels. Técnicas Reunidas, through its Low Emission Solutions business unit, will undertake engineering collaboration and further expand its CO₂ hub business in both the UK and Spain through this hub and related projects.
Paul Davies, Co-founder of Severnside Carbon, said: "Exolum joining as an investor and operator is a critical step in building trust among regional emitters and accelerating investment in carbon capture and related emerging industries. Their exceptional operational capabilities and financial strength significantly reduce the project's execution risk."
Joaquín Pérez de Ayala, Director of TRACK, Técnicas Reunidas' low-carbon business unit, added: "This project reinforces our commitment to industrial decarbonisation. Working alongside solid partners like Exolum and Severnside Carbon from the very initial stages is essential for achieving the feasibility of large-scale low-emission infrastructure and strengthening our collaboration in CO₂ hub development."
