en.Wedoany.com Reported - Italy's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti, Mit) has officially confirmed the Naples Ring Road (Tangenziale di Napoli) as the country's first Smart Road, in compliance with Ministerial Decree No. 70/2018 (Decreto Ministeriale n. 70/2018).

The official certification was delivered by a Mit delegation to the Italian Motorway Group (Gruppo Autostrade per l’Italia). The delegation was led by Tullio Ferrante, Undersecretary of State for Infrastructure and Transport, and included Sergio Moschetti, Director General of the Supervisory Authority for Motorways and Concession Contracts, and Francesco Baldoni, Director General of Digitalization and President of the Technical Support Observatory for Smart Roads and Connected and Automated Vehicles.

During the on-site inspection, the delegation learned about the core technologies required to bring the road infrastructure up to Smart Road standards. These technologies primarily cover digitalization of asset monitoring, optimization of traffic management, and functions enabling real-time communication with connected and automated vehicles.

Through a network of sensors deployed along the route and a central technical platform, this Smart Road continuously collects data and automatically generates information, which is shared in real time with infrastructure managers and connected vehicles.

The project was jointly promoted by Mit, Tangenziale di Napoli, and the National Center for Sustainable Mobility (Centro Nazionale per la Mobilità Sostenibile, MOST), with technical support from Movyon, the technology center of the Italian Motorway Group.
