en.Wedoany.com Reported - Slate Asset Management's planned data center project in Hamilton, Canada, has been rejected by the city's adjustment committee. The data center was one of the potential uses for the "Steelport" mixed-use industrial development project, located on an 800-acre site on the shores of Lake Ontario, formerly the Stelco steel mill. Slate plans to transform it into an AI, advanced manufacturing, and clean infrastructure district, exploring the construction of data centers on some parcels.

According to the project website, Slate is evaluating the use of part of the development land for data centers and other industrial purposes. The former steel mill site has access to 200 megawatts of grid capacity and potential for on-site power generation and energy storage. The company stated that no data center tenants have been confirmed, and no final decision has been made.

However, Hamilton's adjustment committee rejected Slate's application to amend existing plans to allow data center construction on some parcels. At last week's meeting, the session lasted over eight hours due to numerous speakers opposing the project. Local media reported that the committee received over 1,600 letters regarding the land subdivision proposal, more than for any other project.

Slate Asset Management is a global investment and management firm focused on core real estate and infrastructure assets, with approximately $12.8 billion in assets under management. The company acquired the site in 2022 and is developing it into the "Steelport" industrial hub, calling it a "once-in-a-generation nation-building opportunity" that could become Canada's most scalable sovereign cloud and computing zone. Slate previously stated it is participating in a proposal submitted by the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (DRAC) for the federal government's "AI Sovereign Computing Infrastructure Initiative," which aims to build large-scale sovereign public AI supercomputers. Slate did not respond to inquiries about whether it will appeal the committee's decision to a provincial body.
