en.Wedoany.com Reported - Zambia has called for a more inclusive and capacity-oriented approach to global artificial intelligence governance, emphasizing that developing countries must fully participate in shaping the future of AI policy and innovation.

Zambia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Chola Milambo, stated at a briefing on the preparations for the first Global AI Governance Dialogue that AI governance and capacity building must advance in tandem to ensure fair participation in the global digital economy. The briefing, held on June 11, 2026, in New York, brought together representatives from member states and international organizations to review preparations for the upcoming Global AI Governance Dialogue, scheduled for July 8-9, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland. This dialogue is part of the activities under the Global Digital Compact.
Dr. Milambo emphasized that persistent gaps in infrastructure, technical skills, data access, computing power, and innovation ecosystems limit the full participation of many developing countries in AI governance and development, and addressing these gaps is an urgent priority.
China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, reaffirmed China's high-level participation in the dialogue, calling it an important platform for sharing experiences on AI's role in supporting sustainable development. The co-chairs of the dialogue, Egriselda López and Rein Tammsaar, highlighted the importance of inclusive multi-stakeholder cooperation in shaping the global AI governance framework.
Representatives from the International Telecommunication Union and UNESCO also provided updates on the dialogue's preparations, noting its critical role in implementing the Global Digital Compact adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2024. During the interactive discussion, delegates stressed the need for pragmatic and action-oriented outcomes, strengthened international cooperation, and increased support for capacity building to ensure that the AI governance framework is inclusive, balanced, and responsive to the needs of all countries.
The upcoming Global AI Governance Dialogue is expected to serve as a key platform for advancing common principles and coordinated actions on AI at the global level.
