en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Ontario government is investing over $2.8 million to upgrade two port facilities in northwestern Ontario, aiming to strengthen domestic supply chains, expand east-west trade, and reduce reliance on the U.S. market.

On Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford announced the funding at a press conference in Thunder Bay, stating that it will support infrastructure improvements at the Thunder Bay Port and the Marathon Peninsula Port Authority.

Specifically, Ford said the funds will be used to expand warehousing and cargo consolidation capacity at the Port of Thunder Bay and to create a marine terminal at the Port of Marathon.

"This will enable these ports to increase cargo throughput and transport more local products to southern Ontario, other provinces, and around the world, including critical minerals from the Ring of Fire, forest products, grain, and potash, as well as components for pipelines and wind turbines," the Premier said.

"By 2025, the Port of Thunder Bay will handle over 10.7 million tonnes of cargo, with the vast majority destined for domestic markets or international markets outside the United States. The Port of Thunder Bay is one of Canada's key inland ports and a gateway to the western provinces and Europe."
