Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 6, EnviTec Biogas has achieved a key milestone in the U.S. with the commissioning of its largest anaerobic digestion plant to date, located in South Dakota. Operated through its U.S. subsidiary, the facility strengthens ties with SJI Renewable Energy Ventures and local partners. Since early 2025, it has processed over 300,000 gallons of manure daily from more than 9,500 dairy cows, producing 483 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of renewable natural gas (RNG)—equivalent to about 177,000 million BTU annually. This marks a significant step for EnviTec, a biogas industry leader in the U.S. since its first project in 2012.

Lars von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc., stated: “This facility marks the fifth of a total of 15 biogas plants we are developing for our client, a leading company in renewable energy and sustainable solutions.” Eight of these plants support farms run by a major U.S. agribusiness. Timothy Logan, President of EnviTec Biogas Construction LLC, added: “This new facility is a true win-win for both business and the environment. Not only does it convert organic dairy waste into renewable biogas, but it also helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of dairy farming.”

EnviTec stands out in the U.S. by offering locally made, high-quality concrete tanks, produced in partnership with Collins Precast LLC, a top precast concrete supplier in the Upper Midwest. Logan noted: “Our concrete tank design is the first of their kind to be approved in South Dakota.” The client has also signed a multi-year service deal with EnviTec, covering scheduled maintenance, on-demand support, a 24/7 hotline, and biological services from the Watertown, South Dakota office. Logan said: “Especially during the commissioning and ramp-up phase, we have been providing weekly sampling and analysis through our laboratory in Watertown.”

With this fifth plant completed for SJI, EnviTec has delivered one-third of its planned portfolio. Three more projects recently finished cold commissioning and are now scaling up, while the company’s first Minnesota plants are set to launch later in 2025. Since 2002, EnviTec Biogas AG has built over 700 biogas plants across 18 countries, using diverse feedstocks like dairy manure and food waste, and offering technologies such as anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, ammonia stripping, bio-LCO2, and bio-LNG.
