en.Wedoany.com Reported - Argentina's Exolgan Terminal is undergoing a $280 million expansion, its first in 15 years, aiming to increase its current handling capacity of 1.35 million TEUs to 2 million TEUs by 2030.

The terminal, a joint venture between Singapore's PSA International (PSA) and Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) of MSC, is located in the Dock Sud district, 8 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. With the Port of Buenos Aires handling 2.2 million TEUs, Exolgan holds a 47% market share, making it Argentina's largest container terminal. Its concession was renewed in August 2025, with two extensions of 10 years each, extending the total term to 2045.

Exolgan Terminal features a 1,200-meter continuous linear berth, composed of three main operational docks (Docks 1, 2, and 3), covering an area of over 50 hectares. It is the only terminal in the region capable of simultaneously accommodating two post-Panama vessels.

Roberto Triay, Commercial Manager of Exolgan Terminal, told Seatrade Maritime News that the expansion is fully funded by internal resources. One reason is that by transforming Berth 1 into a 470-meter-long berth, post-Panamax vessels of up to 16,000 TEUs can dock, thereby doubling throughput capacity. Berth 3 will be expanded from 360 meters to 430 meters, bringing the total berth length to 1,237 meters by 2030.

Triay added that the government is completing the main tender for dredging the primary navigation channel, with dredging being Argentina's top priority. In 2025, the terminal handled 995,000 TEUs. During peak seasons and when ports in Rio Grande and Santos, Brazil, are congested, it receives some transshipment cargo, which occurs only once a year from May to August.

One of the current challenges is achieving automation, with the expansion focusing on introducing automation in various areas. For example, the number of gate counters will increase from 10 to 25 and become operational this year, also including customer service and the collections department of the administration.
