en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 3, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority confirmed that the fault in the SEA-ME-WE 5 international submarine cable system has been repaired, restoring internet services across Pakistan to normal operational levels. Previously, the submarine cable fault caused some users to experience reduced internet speeds, unstable connections, and fluctuations in service quality.

SMW5 is one of the key submarine communication links connecting Pakistan to the international internet, carrying a portion of the country's cross-border data traffic. When a submarine cable fault occurs, the impact typically directly affects international access, cloud services, cross-border enterprise communications, online video, financial transactions, remote work, and data center interconnections. During the fault repair period, Pakistan rerouted traffic through other international links to minimize the impact on users and enterprise services.

During the repair process, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority coordinated with Transworld Associates. TWA is a key operator of Pakistan's international communication capacity and submarine fiber optic cable systems, responsible for ensuring cross-border data transmission links. After the repair, the SMW5 submarine cable resumed full operation, and related internet traffic returned to normal carrying status.

Submarine cables are the infrastructure connecting South Asian countries to the global internet. For Pakistan, the stability of international communication links directly impacts software outsourcing, cross-border e-commerce, financial services, remote education, cloud computing, government systems, and mobile internet experiences. Although this fault was short-lived, it once again highlights the importance of submarine cable redundancy, international bandwidth backup, traffic scheduling, and emergency communication capabilities. As traffic from cloud services, AI applications, video platforms, and digital payments increases, Pakistan still needs to enhance the diversity of its international exit links to reduce the impact of a single cable fault on the national network experience.

Currently, the SMW5 submarine cable fault has been fully repaired, and internet services across Pakistan have returned to normal operation. Future focus will shift to monitoring international communication infrastructure, building link redundancy, operator traffic scheduling, and enhancing the resilience of the submarine cable system.
