en.Wedoany.com Reported - Globe Telecom has partnered with Starlink to launch the country's first commercially approved satellite direct-to-cell service, utilizing Starlink's low Earth orbit satellite constellation to provide mobile connectivity in remote and disaster-prone areas.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) provided regulatory approval for the service launch, authorizing Globe to operate Starlink's Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service nationwide. NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez signed the approval document. The satellite network acts as a "tower in space" in areas where traditional terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or disrupted, delivering mobile connectivity directly to compatible devices.

Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz stated that this technology enhances digital inclusion and accessibility. With commercial launch approval, Globe's coverage has expanded beyond traditional cell towers, providing connectivity even in the most remote or severely affected areas. Prior to this commercial deployment, Globe successfully conducted an emergency deployment on June 8 following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani provinces, when ground communication infrastructure faced disruptions.

The service supports sending text messages, voice and video calls through compatible applications, as well as direct outdoor satellite connection for navigation data. Users need an LTE-capable device and a valid Globe SIM card to use the service. Device compatibility depends on manufacturer, model, and software version; iOS devices are currently not supported.

For dual-SIM devices, users must set the Globe SIM card as the default for data and SMS services. Outside Globe's terrestrial coverage, users need a clear, unobstructed view of the sky for the device to automatically connect to the satellite network. Globe added that some devices may require enabling data roaming, but accessing the Starlink network within the Philippines will not incur additional roaming charges.

Access fees for Globe Prepaid and TM users start at 99 Philippine pesos. Globe Platinum and postpaid subscribers (Plan 1499 and above) can use the service for free. Globe stated that this service launch is part of its strategy to strengthen digital inclusion and enhance disaster resilience, aiming to ensure reliable connectivity in emergencies and underserved areas.
