en.Wedoany.com Reported - The groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment project of the Priory Shopping Centre in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, UK, was held in June, marking the official start of the next phase of construction.

The project, led by Bassetlaw District Council, is supported by £17.9 million in funding from the UK government and an additional £2 million from the district council. Midlands-based contractor G F Tomlinson is delivering the project on behalf of the district council through The Medium Works Framework, managed by Pagabo on behalf of the Education Alliance.
Representatives from Bassetlaw District Council, including Council Leader Cllr Julie Leigh, joined G F Tomlinson, Pagabo, project management company Beyond Consult, Anotherkind Architects, and consultancy firm Gleeds at the ceremony to celebrate the start of construction work following the completion of the demolition phase.
Preliminary preparation work began in February 2026, followed by the careful demolition of parts of the existing Priory Centre building. The work was carried out while maintaining access to existing retail units and the main pedestrian thoroughfare through the town centre, minimising disruption to businesses, residents, and visitors. Construction activities are now underway, with the shopping centre set to feature facilities such as a climbing wall, an indoor adventure play area, and a bowling alley. Subsequent work includes refurbishing public areas and constructing a footbridge over the Chesterfield Canal to provide a new entrance to the redevelopment project and the town centre. The project aims to create a modern, attractive environment to increase footfall, strengthen the town centre's function, and support long-term economic growth in the region.
Located in the historic market town of Worksop, the project continues to face complex logistical challenges due to its proximity to existing retailers, residential areas, and busy transport routes. G F Tomlinson has worked closely with the district council and stakeholders throughout the project to ensure safe and efficient construction while maintaining public access and commercial operations.
Bassetlaw District Council purchased the site in 2023, with the majority of the £20 million redevelopment funding coming from the former government's Levelling Up Fund. The redevelopment plan is a key component of the council's broader vision to enhance the town centre and create a better destination for local residents, businesses, and visitors.
Andy Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson, said the groundbreaking ceremony was a proud moment for everyone involved in the project, showcasing the progress achieved through collaboration. With the demolition work completed, on-site construction is progressing smoothly, and the future vision for the Priory Centre is beginning to take shape. As a contractor with a long history in the Midlands, the company understands the importance of such projects in supporting local communities and creating lasting economic and social value. The team has worked closely with the district council and project stakeholders during the planning and early delivery phases to ensure safe and careful work in a busy town centre environment.
Council Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, Cllr Julie Leigh, said the project represents a significant milestone in a transformative development that will bring modern leisure and entertainment facilities to the town centre. The changes are already very noticeable, and the scale of the project is becoming clear. This new destination will help revitalise the high street and complement the impact generated by attracting new businesses and supporting existing retailers.
Elliott Talbot, Senior Category Manager at Pagabo, noted that it is encouraging to see construction progress on this important redevelopment project following the completion of the demolition phase. The Priory Centre redevelopment demonstrates the value of strong collaboration between the public sector, delivery partners, and the local supply chain in turning ambitious town centre regeneration projects into reality. Through the Medium Works Framework, the company has supported Bassetlaw District Council in delivering a project that creates lasting social and economic benefits for Worksop, enhancing the town centre experience for residents, businesses, and visitors.
