en.Wedoany.com Reported - Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines, Waldir Ayasta Mechán, recently visited the Cerro Verde mining facility to oversee the execution of key production processes and receive updates on projects aimed at maintaining operational continuity.

The head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) praised Cerro Verde's operations as a global benchmark for sustainable, technological, and innovative mining in the Arequipa region. Minister Ayasta toured several sections of the mine, including Concentradora 2, one of the world's largest mineral processing infrastructure facilities within this large open-pit copper-molybdenum complex. He then proceeded to the mine viewpoint, a vantage point overlooking the Cerro Verde, Santa Rosa, and Cerro Negro mining areas, as well as the metal extraction process. Cerro Verde executives presented the scale of operations and technological advancements adopted to enhance efficiency.

During another segment of the visit, Minister Ayasta was briefed on initiatives coordinated by Cerro Verde with national and local institutions concerning water resource management, governance, and public infrastructure. This visit was part of his work agenda, joining an official delegation led by President José María Balcázar on a trip to the Arequipa region to inaugurate infrastructure projects and oversee key regional initiatives.

The approval of a modification to the Environmental Impact Assessment will allow Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde to extend its operations until 2053. Julia Torreblanca, Vice President of Corporate Affairs, stated in an interview with the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) that this will bring new investments to support the mine's continued operations. She explained that the company is focused on developing critical infrastructure and sustaining projects to support the new operational phase, with most investments being sustaining capital expenditures, though they also include investments such as building a concentrator plant within the pit. The executive emphasized that the extended operational life opens new prospects for project execution over the coming decades, with some infrastructure requiring upgrades and expansions to match the additional operational lifespan extended from 2045 to 2053.
