en.Wedoany.com Reported - Indian Railways has approved an expansion plan worth ₹1.75 billion to enhance the capacity of the electric locomotive stabling facility at the High Horsepower (HHP) diesel shed in Raipur. Operated by the South East Central Railway (SECR), the upgraded facility will increase its maintenance capacity to 250 three-phase electric locomotives, aligning with the railway system's comprehensive transition to electrified operations.

As Indian Railways accelerates its modernization process, the growing number of electric locomotives has heightened the demand for dedicated maintenance facilities. This infrastructure upgrade project aims to bolster the railway's repair and maintenance capabilities. Serving as a core hub for routine inspections, preventive maintenance, fault repairs, and servicing, this stabling shed will ensure locomotives remain in a safe, reliable, and readily available condition. Upon expansion, the facility will more efficiently support locomotive preparation and maintenance, improve availability rates, and optimize overall operational workflows.
The project will also make fuller use of existing site resources, reserving development space for future technological upgrades at the Raipur depot. With the rapid expansion of the electric locomotive fleet, building matching maintenance infrastructure has become a critical factor in sustaining railway operational efficiency.
Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to alleviate maintenance bottlenecks and enhance locomotive fleet reliability, thereby providing smoother operational support for freight and passenger services. This investment aligns with Indian Railways' strategic direction toward long-term efficiency improvements and the creation of a modern, technology-driven railway network.
