en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 16, 2026, Boeing, Lufthansa, and Rolls-Royce announced a partnership to conduct flight tests aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing aircraft noise. These trials are part of the ecoDemonstrator Explorer 2026 program and will be conducted on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

Boeing, Lufthansa, and Rolls-Royce test technologies to reduce fuel consumption and noise

The test flights will begin later this month at Boeing's facility in Glasgow, Montana, USA, and are expected to continue until mid-August. After the activities, the aircraft will be delivered to Lufthansa.

One of the technologies being evaluated is the Next Generation Inlet, a shortened engine inlet demonstrator with advanced acoustic treatment. This component is designed to enable future aircraft to integrate more efficient engines while reducing weight and aerodynamic drag without compromising acoustic performance.

Another innovation involves improved takeoff and landing procedures, including flight paths developed by the Intelligent Operations system. By leveraging algorithms and multiple data sources, these trajectories aim to reduce fuel consumption and minimize noise impact on communities near airports.

Lane Ballard, Boeing's Chief Technology Officer, stated that the tested technologies have the potential to make future aircraft more efficient and more valuable to airlines and engine manufacturers. Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology Officer of the Lufthansa Group, emphasized that the initiative helps accelerate the aviation industry's transformation by validating solutions in real-world operations. Alan Newby, Rolls-Royce's Director of Research and Technology, noted that the project represents the culmination of over a decade of collaboration among the companies to develop technologies that reduce noise, improve efficiency, and support more sustainable aviation.

These trials are part of Phase 3 of the CLEEN (Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise) program, a collaboration between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and industry, aimed at developing technologies to reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and noise levels. Boeing's ecoDemonstrator program, launched in 2012, has tested over 260 technologies in operational environments, accelerating the development of solutions for safety, operational efficiency, emissions reduction, and improved passenger experience.
