en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated nearly £5 million to four new projects as additional funding for the Safer Roads Fund, which had previously received £195 million.

Local Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood announced the four schemes as the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) released its latest report on the fund and its impact.

A188 Newcastle & North Tyneside received £1,633,500.

A1074 Norfolk received £1,672,000.

A611 Nottingham (Hucknall Road) received £396,000.

A319 Surrey received £1,298,000.

The Department for Transport stated that the announced £4.99 million is not for entirely new projects but represents additional funding for four schemes under existing projects. The fund had previously allocated £100 million and £95 million. This additional funding brings the total investment in the fund to over £200 million since its launch in 2016.

Safer, No Regrets

The latest report on the fund, released alongside the four new schemes, shows that the program (excluding the new projects) is expected to prevent approximately 2,700 deaths and serious injuries over 20 years, generating £1.25 billion in social benefits from the £195 million investment, equating to an estimated return of £5.30 for every £1 invested.

The previous report was published during the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest version updates all projects to date and explains the methodology used. The Road Safety Foundation noted that the fund focuses on high-risk local A-roads (both rural and urban) with limited alternative routes, and its use of iRAP star ratings is informing a broader national approach to road safety.
