Piracicaba Sewage Treatment Plant in Brazil Treats 3 Billion Liters of Sewage Monthly
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The sewage treatment plant in Piracicaba, Brazil, treats over 3 billion liters of sewage per month without using any chemical agents, and the treated water meets national environmental regulations. Operated by Mirante (a subsidiary of Aegea), the plant employs the activated sludge biological treatment method as its core technology.

In the practical application of the activated sludge process, sewage is introduced into large aeration tanks, where continuous injection of oxygen-rich air promotes the growth of microorganisms that feed on organic matter in the sewage. Luis Gustavo Theodoro, Operations Coordinator at Mirante, explains that after this efficient cycle, the liquid enters sedimentation tanks, where gravity separates clean water from solids.
All treated materials undergo over 29,000 laboratory analyses per month before being returned to the environment, to verify compliance with the standards of Resolution No. 430 of the Brazilian National Environment Council (Conama). These analyses cover operational control indicators and quality compliance.
Mirante's work encompasses the entire chain from sewage collection to final discharge. Proper use of the sewer network by residents and correct disposal of waste (such as avoiding throwing garbage, plastics, diapers, or oil into drains and toilets) are key to preventing pipe blockages and overflows. Daniel Mantovani, CEO of Mirante, states that the company's collaboration with the municipal government has driven continuous progress in urban sanitation facilities, daily care for the Piracicaba River and its tributaries, directly improving residents' health, dignity, and quality of life.
