Wedoany.com Report-Jun 20, MET Group, based in Switzerland, has launched Hungary’s largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Dunamenti Power Station in Százhalombatta, Hungary. Announced on June 20, 2025, the 40MW/80MWh facility operates on a two-hour cycle and supports the integration of renewable energy into Hungary’s power grid. This project builds on MET’s earlier 4MW/8MWh demonstrator installed at the same site in 2022, which used Tesla Megapack 2 batteries.

The new system, equipped by Huawei Technologies and constructed by Forest-Vill Ltd, enhances grid stability and promotes sustainable energy use. The combined storage capacity at Százhalombatta can power Budapest’s decorative and public lighting for four hours, according to MET Group. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy solutions across Europe.

Péter Horváth, chief executive of Dunamenti Power Station, stated: “The application of battery energy storage systems is a key element on the road to energy transition, as they allow to increase the penetration of new renewable sources into the power grid.”

Péter Kaderják, president of the Hungarian Battery Association, said: “We must strive by all possible means to exploit Hungary’s renewable energy sources as extensively as possible, using well-established, cost-effective technologies.”

MET Group is also growing its BESS portfolio through strategic investments, including the 2024 acquisition of Comax, a French battery developer. The company is developing co-located storage projects alongside solar parks in multiple European countries. In 2024, MET reported sales revenue of €17.9 billion, with traded volumes of 140 billion cubic meters of gas and 76TWh of electricity.

The Százhalombatta facility represents a significant step in Hungary’s energy transition, enabling greater use of renewable sources while maintaining grid reliability. MET’s ongoing investments reflect its commitment to sustainable energy infrastructure across the region.
