Hydrogen-Powered USV Becomes First UK-Certified Remotely Operated and Unmanned Vessel

Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 13, Lloyd’s Register, a classification and compliance services provider, has issued the United Kingdom’s first certification for a remotely operated and unmanned vessel (ROUV) to ACUA Ocean’s hydrogen-powered uncrewed surface vessel (USV), named PIONEER. The certification, awarded under the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Workboat Code Edition 3 (WBC3) Annex 2, marks a significant milestone for maritime innovation in the UK.

Introduced in December 2023, the WBC3 Annex 2 outlines safety and operational standards for ROUVs in UK waters. Lloyd’s Register was the first certifying authority authorized by the MCA to issue such certificates and has now completed the first full certification process for an operational ROUV. The PIONEER features a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, advanced autonomous navigation, remote command capabilities, and a modular design suited for offshore tasks like environmental monitoring, maritime awareness, and infrastructure inspection.

This certification enables PIONEER to proceed with sea trials under the UK Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition (CMDC), which promotes technologies for maritime decarbonization. ACUA Ocean plans to conduct these trials using hydrogen power before developing hybrid and electric variants of the vessel.

Anderson Chaplow, Principal Specialist at Lloyd’s Register, stated: “This certification represents a major step forward – not just for ACUA Ocean or LR, but for the wider UK maritime industry. It proves that certification of small, complex ROUVs under Annex 2 is achievable and sets a precedent for others in the industry to follow. It also shows what’s possible when developers, regulators and classification societies collaborate to bring emerging technologies safely into operation.”

Lloyd’s Register highlighted the collaborative efforts with ACUA Ocean and the MCA in establishing these standards, which are essential for integrating advanced autonomous systems into maritime operations. The organization anticipates issuing additional WBC3 Annex 2 certifications in the coming months.

The PIONEER’s certification underscores the UK’s commitment to advancing sustainable maritime technologies. By supporting innovative vessels like PIONEER, the industry aims to enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. ACUA Ocean’s work with the CMDC trials and future vessel developments positions it as a key contributor to the UK’s maritime decarbonization efforts.
