Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 24, DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight division of Deutsche Post DHL Group, has deepened its collaboration with Henkel, a chemical and consumer goods company, to increase the use of sustainable marine fuel (SMF). This initiative aims to significantly reduce transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, building on a 2024 pilot where SMF was used for select Henkel shipments.

The expanded partnership involves ocean carriers using waste- and residue-based marine fuels on behalf of DHL Global Forwarding. Through the Book & Claim system, DHL allocates emissions reductions to Henkel, allowing the replacement of fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives across its network, even if Henkel’s shipments are not physically transported using these fuels. In 2025, DHL plans to apply SMF to approximately 9,000 TEUs of Henkel’s ocean freight via its GoGreen Plus service.

This approach is expected to cut GHG emissions by about 4,700 metric tons of CO2e on a well-to-wake basis, achieving an 85% reduction on the main haul compared to conventional fuels. An independent certification body, SGS, will verify these reductions to ensure transparency and accuracy.

Ondrej Slezacek, Global Category Manager Sea & Air Freight at Henkel, stated: “Working with DHL Global Forwarding on sustainable transport solutions is an important part of our strategy to reduce emissions within our logistics processes. Simultaneously, it helps accelerate the overall transition to low-emission logistics in our industry.”

Amanda Rasmussen, Chief Commercial Officer at DHL Global Forwarding, said: “This expansion of our partnership is another milestone in our joint decarbonization journey. By combining Henkel’s ambitious climate strategy with our sustainable logistics solutions, we are demonstrating that progress toward decarbonizing supply chains is possible today. We hope this agreement will inspire other companies to transition to low-emission transportation services using Sustainable Marine Fuel.”

The collaboration builds on existing efforts between DHL and Henkel to optimize transport modes and consolidate shipments, further reducing emissions. By scaling up the use of SMF, the partnership supports sustainable logistics practices and contributes to the broader adoption of low-carbon solutions in the industry.

This initiative aligns with global sustainability goals, enhancing supply chain efficiency while reducing environmental impact. The partnership sets a model for other companies to adopt innovative, eco-friendly transport solutions, fostering a transition to greener logistics worldwide.
