Wedoany.com Report-Nov 15, Israel Railways marked the arrival of its final electric Traxx locomotive in Lod, closing a chapter on an agreement made nearly a decade ago.
Officials from Israel Railways and Alstom joined for a formal handover ceremony, recognizing this milestone in Israel Railways' ongoing transition to electric rail service.
With this addition, there are now 63 Traxx locomotives in Israel Railways' fleet. Currently, 44 of these electric units are operational, servicing key lines, while the remaining units are housed across various railway complexes for ongoing preparation and maintenance, managed by Alstom, before entering full service. These locomotives are part of a larger effort to modernize Israel's railways, with electric trains gradually replacing older models.
In parallel, Israel Railways is pushing forward with the electrification of tracks across several regions, including Beer Sheva, Western Negev, and Karmiel. Around 70 percent of the electrification project has been completed, with remaining work aimed at connecting these areas to the electric network. Once finalized, these regions are expected to benefit from quieter, more environmentally efficient electric trains, an aspect central to Israel’s modernization strategy.
The project’s completion remains targeted for late next year, with Israel Railways continuing to balance infrastructure improvements and public service availability.
