Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 5, Greek containership owner Costamare has expanded its newbuilding program in China, adding two additional 3,100 TEU vessels to its series, the company announced in its third-quarter earnings report. The New York-listed firm said the ships are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2028 from an undisclosed Chinese shipyard. Both vessels will immediately enter eight-year charters with a leading liner company.
This addition increases Costamare’s total orders for 3,100 TEU newbuildings to six, reflecting the company’s gradual return to the shipyard market. Earlier in 2025, Costamare placed its first newbuilding orders since 2018, signaling renewed confidence in long-term charter demand for mid-sized containerships.
Costamare currently operates a fleet of 69 containerships, with a total capacity of around 520,000 TEU, excluding the newbuildings. The company has been rebalancing its portfolio through selective vessel sales in recent years while increasing investment in the dry bulk segment.
Earlier this year, the dry bulk business was spun off under Costamare Bulkers, encompassing nearly 40 owned vessels and a chartered-in fleet of about 50 ships, operated through the CBI platform. This strategic restructuring allows Costamare to focus on its container shipping operations while maintaining a presence in the dry bulk market.
The decision to order additional mid-sized newbuildings reflects Costamare’s strategy to meet expected charter demand and strengthen its position in the global containership market. Each of the new 3,100 TEU vessels will support long-term charter agreements, ensuring steady revenue generation once delivered.
By returning to the newbuilding market, Costamare is demonstrating confidence in the future of mid-sized containerships amid evolving global trade patterns. The move also aligns with the company’s approach of maintaining a balanced fleet portfolio, combining modern, fuel-efficient vessels with reliable charter contracts to optimize operational and financial performance.
Overall, the expansion of the 3,100 TEU series underscores Costamare’s commitment to fleet modernization and long-term growth, supporting its role as a key player in container shipping while complementing its recently established dry bulk operations. The company’s approach continues to emphasize strategic investments, measured fleet expansion, and portfolio optimization to adapt to market opportunities.
