Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 12, JSW Energy has commissioned India’s first and largest green hydrogen manufacturing plant, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The facility is located adjacent to JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar unit in Karnataka and forms part of Tranche I of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
The project forms part of the wider SIGHT programme.
The plant will supply green hydrogen directly to JSW Steel’s direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, supporting low-carbon steel production. A seven-year offtake agreement is in place, providing 3,800 tpa of green hydrogen and 30,000 tpa of green oxygen to the steelmaker. The project is part of JSW Energy’s 6,800 tpa allocation under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, managed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India.
In addition, JSW Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with JSW Steel to supply 85,000–90,000 tpa of green hydrogen and 720,000 tpa of green oxygen by 2030. These initiatives align with India’s broader green hydrogen targets, aiming to reach around five million tons per annum by 2030 and support the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel.
Sharad Mahendra, JSW Energy joint managing director and CEO, said: “We are proud to commission India’s first green hydrogen plant under National Green Hydrogen Mission, implemented through the SIGHT programme by the Government of India. The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel. Green hydrogen will assume a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India].”
JSW Energy currently has a total locked-in power generation capacity of 30.5 GW, comprising 13.3 GW operational, 12.5 GW under construction across thermal and renewable sources, 150 MW under acquisition in hydro, and a further 4.6 GW in the pipeline.
Looking ahead, JSW Energy aims to expand its generation capacity to 30 GW and achieve 40 GWh of energy storage by FY2030, while targeting carbon neutrality by 2050. The green hydrogen plant is expected to play a central role in achieving these goals by providing clean energy for industrial applications and advancing India’s low-carbon economy ambitions.
The commissioning of the Vijayanagar plant positions JSW Energy at the forefront of India’s green hydrogen sector, demonstrating the practical integration of renewable energy into industrial processes and highlighting the country’s progress in sustainable energy and emissions reduction.
